The Hippodrome, Eyemouth

This former Fishermen’s Mission is a category B Listed building situated on Harbour Road, within the Eyemouth Conservation Area.  Following planning and listed building consent, the building is now being transformed into an Arts Centre, studio and dwelling for the owners.

The building sits at the road edge of Harbour Road in Eyemouth. The other edge of Harbour Road forms one of the quaysides of the harbour.  The building forms a significant part of an interesting and harmonious composition facing the harbour of two, three and four storey buildings.

The building with its outhouses and yard has had a varied history. Built as a granary, it has housed a sail loft, a salt store, fish processing and occasional entertainments with the nickname Hippodrome. It was converted for use by the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen in 1987. When it was converted it became a three storey building, although the number of rows of windows give it the appearance of having four storeys, particularly from the harbour side.
